TIE DYE TO DYE FOR

in a tie dye bag, traditional techniques meet modern style

If you’re a fan of boho style, a tie dye bag is probably the best way to start, as it can bring a fun loving, free spirited vibe to your everyday look.

And why wouldn’t you? This whimsical trend has taken over the design world in a big way! From tie dye bags and sarongs, to dresses, shoes, jeans and even bridal dresses, this colourful style is here to stay.

There was a time when it would have been a fashion faux pas to wear tie dye outside of a music festival, but not in 2018. After being featured by some of the biggest fashion houses, the trend has trickled down to the retail market – peek into the world of style blogs or flip through any interiors magazine, and you will see tie dye to, well, dye for!

The bright blend of colours we know as tie dye, has become synonymous with the hippie movement of the 60’s. As people (especially the Americans) were protesting the war in Vietnam, looking for an escape from the stern societal structure of the previous decade, tie dye became a symbol of letting their free spirit flow.

The trend was popularised by American song writer and guitarist, John Sebastian, who coloured his garments himself, under the guidance of a tie dye guru. In an interview for Woodstock, he said:

“I proceeded to tie-dye everything I owned. After you’ve done one piece, you realize, I still have 20 minutes left on this blue, I can tie-dye my underpants and socks, too!”

Much like his most popular song, ‘Welcome Back’, tie dye has now resurfaced on fashion runways around the world.

Tie Dye Bag, Jeans, Wedding Dress …

However, your tie dye bag or jeans are much more than a blast from the groovy past. What many people don’t realise is that traditional methods of tie dye date back as far as the early sixth century, in countries such as India, Africa and Japan.

But don’t take our word for it! Tie dye is an extremely easy DIY technique, which can be used to create complex and intricate patterns.
